It’s a myth that companies aren’t looking for candidates in the run up to Christmas. Many professionals take a break from their job hunt, but they're missing out on some of the best opportunities, with the least competition.
Here are some reasons why now is the perfect time to find your new role:
1. Less competition
Many people can be put off job searching in early winter for a number of reasons, including the misconception that nobody would be hiring (other than retailers). However, there are still many opportunities available across the country, but with fewer candidates going after them. This makes it the best time for a talented professional to put forward their interest, as the jobs are for the taking.
2. Winding down
Many companies are busy right up until the holiday break, but this doesn’t mean that all departments won’t have a second to spare. In fact, many businesses will start to slowly wind down, so that they can better handle the time off, and this creates a great opportunity to take on other tasks, such as welcoming new staff members. Throw in the Christmas party as an icebreaker, and the festive period is a wonderful time for people to join a company without being immediately overloaded with work.
3. Time to ease in
As the Christmas break is coming up for many companies, it will give new hires the chance to catch a breath and process their new job. After initial introductions and getting to know the ropes, you can enjoy the holidays and then come back refreshed for the New Year, where you’ll be able to hit the ground running.
4. Negotiating start dates
Due to Christmas being a unique time of the year, with many firms being closed for at least a week, there is often the chance to negotiate a start day that suits you best. Maybe you want to start as soon as possible, which your new employer would probably be more than happy to accommodate. On the other hand, maybe you want to work out the rest of the year where you are, before having a fresh start in the New Year. Your recruitment consultant can help you to decide which is the best option for your circumstances.
5. Festive spirit
Along with less competition comes the added bonus that employers will likely have fewer stresses, gained from not having to meet as many candidates. An employer in good spirits can only translate into a more enjoyable interview experience for the candidate.
