2018 marks the 150th anniversary of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. The global professional body promotes the highest international standards in surveying. To mark the occasion the RICS have opened their new exhibition; ‘Shaping the World, Building the Future’ at their headquarters in London.

The built environment relies heavily on the skills and expertise of surveyors. According to the World Bank around 70% of the world’s wealth is tied up in real estate. Surveyors help to protect these assets, which in turn, contributes to society and the global economy. Building Surveyors, for example, identify defects in a building and advise on how to properly repair, care for and maintain these buildings. Real estate is an investment and surveyor's play an integral role in ensuring that this investment is kept in good condition. Surveyors can work with an existing building giving refurbishment options to their clients as opposed to a costly new-build.

As the RICS celebrate their 150 years of surveying they have launched their ‘Pride in the Profession’ campaign, showcasing exceptional people and projects which have made a positive effect on society.

“Throughout our 150 years, chartered surveyors have been crucial to urban development and improving communities all over the world.”

Sean Tompkins, RICS Chief Executive

The range of opportunities for surveyors is vast, with the RICS having identified over 170 specialisms. There are so many diverse and exciting projects for surveyors to work on, with various career paths open to those who are chartered. Surveyors benefit from a varied workload, going out on site rather than being chained to their desk. Surveyors are instrumental in building sustainable environments, which is why so many people find their careers in this field so rewarding.

“Once you qualify as a chartered surveyor, your contribution to society cannot be underestimated.”

David Tuffin, President of the RICS
