An exceptional opportunity has arisen for a talented and visionary Director of Architecture to join a well-established, multi-disciplinary consultancy with a strong reputation for design excellence and technical delivery. Based in Winchester, this role offers the chance to lead, shape, and grow a small but highly capable architectural team — with the full backing of a respected national practice.

This opportunity will suit an experienced Architect or Associate Director ready to take the next step into a strategic leadership role, combining hands-on project delivery with the ability to inspire a team and drive business growth.

The Opportunity

You’ll lead the Winchester architectural studio, working closely with directors across other disciplines to deliver creative and commercially successful solutions for clients. With a growing pipeline of work, particularly in the senior living and student accommodation sectors, this is an opportunity to influence the direction of the practice and develop a team known for its quality, innovation, and client focus.

You’ll balance design leadership with business development, mentoring, and operational oversight — ensuring that your team continues to thrive and expand in line with the company’s broader strategic vision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the architectural team in Winchester, setting the standard for quality and innovation
  • Oversee project delivery across all RIBA stages, ensuring design excellence and technical robustness
  • Play an active role in business development and client engagement, expanding the team’s presence within senior living, student accommodation, and wider residential sectors
  • Collaborate with internal project management, cost consultancy, and building surveying teams to deliver cohesive, multidisciplinary solutions
  • Manage team resourcing, mentoring, and recruitment to support long-term growth
  • Ensure compliance with practice standards, planning, and regulatory requirements
  • Represent the business at client meetings, design reviews, and networking events
  • Drive a culture of creativity, collaboration, and continuous improvement

About You We’re looking for an inspiring architectural leader with both design flair and commercial acumen — someone who can balance creativity with strategic thinking and team leadership.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Chartered Architect (ARB / RIBA) with significant post-qualification experience
  • Proven track record leading architectural teams and managing multiple projects
  • Strong portfolio within senior living, student accommodation, or mixed-use residential schemes
  • Excellent design and technical capability, with a pragmatic approach to project delivery
  • Commercial awareness and experience of managing budgets, bids, and client relationships
  • Ability to inspire, mentor, and develop team members
  • Confident communicator and presenter with strong interpersonal skills
  • A collaborative approach with a genuine enthusiasm for design and leadership
