There’s no doubt that salaries across the built environment have shifted significantly over the last few years. Inflation, rising living costs, hybrid working expectations, talent shortages, retention concerns, and increasingly competitive markets have all played their part. Add title inflation into the mix, and suddenly the salary conversation has become more complicated than ever.

One of the most common conversations I’m having at the moment is with highly capable senior professionals who have reached Director level… but suddenly feel stuck.

May has been one of those months that reminds me why I genuinely enjoy working within the built environment sector.

For many professionals in the built environment, the early and mid-stages of a career are clearly defined. You train as a surveyor, engineer, project manager or planner. You build technical expertise, deliver projects, earn chartership, and establish credibility through consistent performance.

In my line of work, some names are just too good to ignore.

The alarm goes off early. Coffee in hand, presentation running through your mind, you prepare as if it were any other working day. Except it isn’t.
